HQ: Chicago, IL NOW PLAYING: Assorted demos (myspace.com/amritarock) THE STORY SO FAR: Having played in established Chicago pop bands like the Academy Is... (drummer Mike Del Principe), October Fall (pianist Owen Toomey) and Blacktop Mourning (frontman Marty Abezetian), the members of Amrita (including guitarist Patrick Riley and bassist Matt Robinson) set to collaborate with a solitary goal: no pop. "Our music and standards always seemed to revolve around somebody else," says Abezetian. "With Amrita, we're completely free to push ourselves like we never have before." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Did you see their resumes? "We're not arrogant or out to shut anybody down," says Abezetian. "We just decided to make a record for us." Although they're still harnessing their vast influences (from Santana to Sigur Rós) into their post-prog ideology, their ambition is firmly in place. "[Maybe] people will use the names of our previous bands to stumble upon music that may be different than what they're used to," he says. "Really, this is still page one." -Tim Karan YOU LIKE?
