HQ: Orange, CANOW PLAYING: Since The Realist EP (deadletterdiaries.com) THE STORY SO FAR: Together since 2003, and with two self-released EPs to their credit, Dead Letter Diaries haven't waited for a label to help them achieve burgeoning-superstar status in their hometown-though we're surprised no label's jumped on the band's dramatic, refreshingly scream-free post-hardcore. "We've learned that you can do a lot on your own," says drummer Paul Riscalla. "We believe that for anyone at a label or agency to want to work for us and help us, we have to want to work for ourselves even harder." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: "The fact that three of us are in high school and our bassist [Jason Frenzel] is in his first year of college limits our touring ability, but every time we have a break from school, we're on the road," says Riscalla. Which may explain why AP first heard of DLD through Jon Vena, talent buyer for the renowned Anaheim, California, venue Chain Reaction (the place where many of the bands you read about here cut their teeth). "If these guys weren't 16, they'd be signed and opening for Underoath," he says. "They draw half the crowd to virtually every sold-out show they play." -Aaron Burgess YOU LIKE?
