Dog Day Afternoon

HQ: Colorado Springs, CO
NOW PLAYING: Attica EP (purevolume.com/dogdayafternoon)

THE STORY SO FAR: After multiple name and lineup changes, this spastic metalcore quartet settled on their current moniker just hours before a 2005 battle-of-the-bands contest—which, guitarist Brendan MacMillan notes, they totally deserved to win. "We apparently lost first place because the singer of the winning band was the daughter of the woman who put together the battle," he remembers. "But we don't hold a grudge—dammit." Having self-produced their new EP, Attica, Dog Day Afternoon are currently working on a covers album, "just for fun."

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: "Our music never pleases the metal kids, the hardcore kids, the emo kids or the punk kids enough for us to have a specific scene, but we have fans in each of those genres," MacMillan explains. And don't let their average age (16!) fool you into thinking DDA can't shred as wildly as their math-metal contemporaries with record deals. Says MacMillan, "The thing that sticks in people's minds after they see us play is that we're 'too young for our songs to be originals.' It's hard for people to believe the oldest member of this band just turned 17." —Aaron Burgess
