THE STORY SO FAR: It's a long way from basement shows in Minnesota to playing in the Middle East. No, not the club in Boston. We're talking about the actual Middle East: Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia. That's exactly where progressive rock outfit A Verse Unsung found themselves this fall. "We played South By Southwest last year and a U.S.O. promoter was at our showcase," says frontman Jake Scherer. "We play on military bases for [U.S.] troops every night. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Aside from their staggering patriotism, Scherer, guitarist Dan Garland, keyboardist Matt Brady, bassist Kenny Fritze and drummer Ryan Guanzon manage to make a unique and addictive blend of modern rock-styled sludge and searing post-hardcore. "It seems bands are more concerned with fitting in their scene than writing good songs," says Scherer. "We consider our music our religion."
