THE STORY SO FAR: It's not exactly analogous, but finding the right ingredients for the perfect alt-pop song is sort of like staring at atoms under a microscope all day. Just ask Army Of Me singer Vince Scheuerman, who was ready to fall back on his mechanical-engineering degree until the project he had with friends Brad Tursi (guitar), Dennis Manuel (drums) and John Hutchins (bass) started turning heads with its not-quite-British, not-quite-Brooklyn, sorta-West Coast blend of lush atmospheres and heated grooves. "We want to make music that will stay with you," says Scheuerman. "We're trying to be one of the best live bands you've ever seen."
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Quick-name one other band whose sound is so wide-reaching that nary a fan blinks an eye when they go from a Bamboozle appearance to an opening slot for My Chemical Romance to a string of dates with O.A.R. and the Wrens. Yeah, we thought so. "If music is like your school, then Army Of Me is the kid that sucks at math," explains Scheuerman, "and, even though he's sitting next to you in class, he'd rather be hanging out in the parking lot. We work to make our songs as original and as meaningful as possible, so that when you hear our music, you'll become a fan." -Aaron Burgess
