Olympia

HQ: Washington, DC
NOW PLAYING: Demos

THE STORY SO FAR:Sometimes, a fresh start is all you need to recapture that creative spark, and Olympia are a picture-perfect example. When Equal Vision band Fairweather finally collapsed in 2004, guitarist Peter Tsouras and drummer Shane Johnson didn't get the memo and kept writing music together, soon adding friend Nick Barkley on bass. The only problem was that they were sans singer--that was quickly resolved, however, when Brand New Disaster broke up in October 2005 and vocalist Phil Williams was without a band for the first time in five years. And in case you didn't count the number of guys in the photo adjoining this paragraph, Williams found his way into the band without incident, and the band proceeded to record their five-song demo EP right before the year's end.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: "I think both Fairweather and Brand New Disaster ended before their time," Barkley says, echoing the sentiments of many in the DC area. Oh, and about that spark? It's back. "We've been working hard writing a record," he continues, "and we are anxious for people to hear what we are doing. I feel like we've picked up where both bands left off and taken it in a whole new direction. Our music is a lot more straightforward rock--darker and more dissonant." If you live on the East Coast, expect to find out soon, as the band promise to be touring "up and down" the coast this year. --Scott Heisel
