NOW PLAYING: Declaration Of Independence EP THE STORY SO FAR:Nobody ever suspects the trombone. It seems like a harmless enough middle school instrument. And then, wham! Here come the Specs with enough head-banging brass to annihilate six pep rallies. Born in 2005 from the ashes of two Jersey bands, the six friends (vocalist/trombonist Brad Pfeifer, baritone saxophonist William Disanza, guitarist Paul Pisano, keyboardist/trumpeter Jared Laskin, bassist Mike Pisano Jr. and drummer Anthony DeCarlo) worked without an agenda and ended up with a raucous mix of straight-ahead rock tinged with ska. Pfeifer says, "We were kind of falling blind and backwards into the songs, trusting each member to take what they learned from their previous writing experiences and expand the songs in different ways." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: In a year's time, the band has toured much of the country and opened for My Chemical Romance, the Starting Line, Matchbook Romance, Gym Class Heroes and Punchline-a list that showcases how difficult it is to classify the Specs. "We work hard to write music that borrows from various genres while still retaining a bold rock feel," says Laskin. And if that, along with an insane live show isn't enough, they do a fierce cover of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up" worthy of adorning any (read: your) MySpace page. --Tim Karan YOU LIKE?
