NOW PLAYING: A Better Tomorrow THE STORY SO FAR:In the Dominican Republic, if your band lacks maracas, an accordion and a tambora drum, good luck convincing your neighbors you have a band at all. Since 2000, Darkmiracle-a melodic emocore four-piece straight outta Santo Domingo-have endured not only standard fledgling band obstacles, but they've also been saddled with the task of introducing a relatively unknown musical genre to an entire nation. "We're creating a new sound which, in our country, is not heard at all," says vocalist Roberto Cabral. Blending pre-programmed beats with crunching guitars and hooks, the band (Cabral, guitarist Gabriel Febles, bassist Salvador Alba and drummer Juan Carlos) used prize money from a 2001 talent show to produce a demo, which paved the way for an EP, a full-length and a few self-financed videos including one for the single "Drama" which can be seen on YouTube.com. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Because there's nowhere left to go but to you. "We've done every show possible in every corner and every venue that opens its doors to rock in the Dominican Republic," says Cabral. "The next step is booking shows and bringing the band to the U.S." MySpace, YouTube and record sales via Interpunk.com have brought the band a taste of international notoriety and they're currently making a strong push on college campuses and radio stations in New York and Boston. "We're expressing ourselves through our music and crossing fingers with hopes of getting our music to all the public worldwide," says Cabral. --Tim Karan YOU LIKE?
