THE STORY SO FAR: By the end of their senior year of high school, guitarists Alex Hayes and Evan Rivera were ready to tuck away their rock aspirations in a milk crate and head to college. "We had tried about two or three different lineups, but nothing ever stuck due to dedication issues," says Hayes. "We gave it one last shot, and right as we were graduating, the pieces started to fall into place." In a crazy game of six-degrees-of-band-formation, a mutual friend introduced Hayes to guitarist-turned-bassist Kevin Donohue; Hayes brought in vocalist Jay Sloma; and Sloma's girlfriend brought in drummer Adam Derza. "All of a sudden, everything felt solid," says Hayes. By the summer of 2005, the burgeoning five-piece still planned to continue their educations, but also began writing and performing at break-neck speed. Within only a few months of existence, they opened for the likes of Lorene Drive, Forgive Durden and Rookie Of The Year. And they graced the stage at Chicago rock institution the Metro-the smoke-filled fantasy of any self-respecting Midwest musician.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: The guys in A Fading Memory have never let obstacles-or public opinion-get in the way of their pop-punk. "We've been denied show opportunities; told we aren't going to make it; that it looked like our band was falling apart," says Hayes. "But you have to have the strength and dedication to make things happen." The path that AFM took was paved with kinetic performance after kinetic performance. "To get the full experience of emotion and feeling from our music, you really need to see us live," says Derza. "We always try to give our [audience] the feeling of wanting to jump onstage with us-'cause, really, it's one big party." - Tim Karan
