A Kiss Could Be Deadly

HQ: Orange County, CA
NOW PLAYING: Pink Noise Sessions EP

THE STORY SO FAR: Maybe good bands come along just as Amanda Bynes would have us believe love does: When you least expect it, accompanied by an '80s-inspired dance beat. A Kiss Could Be Deadly was originally supposed to be an occasional distraction for synth player/programmer Chris Qualls-heavy on the electro-funk and light on the punk he'd played since high school. The idea was to feature a different vocalist on every track-until Lauren Baird and her Benatar-inspired voice walked through the door. "She did such an amazing job on the first track that I asked her to sing full-time," he says. "We recorded six songs together and started passing them out to friends under the name A Kiss Could Be Deadly." With a buzz building, he recruited a few punk musicians he'd played with-guitarist Tim Floyd, bassist Kelly Cairns and drummer Danny Deleon-and the unintentional band was born. "[At] our first practice, we knew we had something special."

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Not many bands could conceivably tear up both Warped Tour and Ibiza. Even though they've opened for I Am Ghost and new-wave icons Berlin, Qualls says, "I would love to see people getting down on the dance floor to A Kiss Could Be Deadly," noting that the band creates their own remixes. Though one might be inclined to lump the band in with others in the neo-wave indie dance movement, Qualls says that it's the outfit's diverse musical background (each member plays at least two instruments) and punk proficiency that set them apart. "We have a unique sound," he says. "[Combining] dance and punk is something that hasn't really been done." Look for the band to bring their head-bobbing mini masterpieces to a venue near you. The plan for 2007: "Record a full-length and tour a bunch." - Tim Karan
