HQ: Los Angeles, CANOW PLAYING: Assorted demos THE STORY SO FAR: In 2005, Aphex Twin released a nightmarish short film called Rubber Johnny. A little over a year ago, an apparent webcam homage called Rubber Jono surfaced on YouTube featuring From First To Last's Sonny Moore and a mysterious "Jono" cavorting in spastic, OK Go-type choreography. Soon after, FFTL fans responded with the highest form of flattery: Their own YouTube homages. But who is Jono? He's Endless Hallway guitarist Jono Evans and his band wields a finely seared brand of dramatic post-post-hardcore pop. The concept began in late 2004, when then-art students Evans and vocalist Ryan Jackson started collaborating on computer-based music. After Moore (who met some of the guys through previous opening stints for FFTL) and, ahem, Moore's parents stepped in, the band found their footing. Jackson says, "Through Sonny, we acquired [drummer] Joe Mullen [Underminded] and [guitarist] Michael Tye [formerly of Dead Reckless]." And if that wasn't enough, "[Moore's] parents currently house three-quarters of our band," says Mullen. "They also paid for half of our demo." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: That untitled demo, recorded in 2005 with producer Noah Shain (Orson), features a band that looks-have you seen them? They're dreamy-and sounds far more professional than their two years of existence seemingly should allow. "The music is built to encourage the listener to create a world around each song," says Jackson. "We're interested in all the different colors and emotions [music] can evoke." While Evans makes cash teaching guitar, Tye works at Hot Topic and the other two are slaves to Blockbuster Video. Do they plan to keep their jobs? "Definitely not," says Jackson, who says the band celebrated winning the AP contest with a "wonderful foot-long feast" at Subway. "The dynamics, range and epic qualities of our music are enough to win over anyone." - Tim Karan YOU LIKE?
