“We are ragtime-metal,” says keyboardist/vocalist Mike Maimone. “We are a jazz trio collectively dropped on its head as pups. We play evil carnival music led by a barker who is part Rowlf, part Cookie Monster and part Animal.” Accordingly, the prolific Chicago trio—who release new tunes in short bursts between their members’ day jobs—recorded their debut EP on a broken, ’60s-era 8-track and share an old-fashioned approach to music. “[We] came together as a musical and mental release while on tour playing other people’s music, opening for bands who played to backing tracks and churned out ‘perfect-sounding’ radio hits.”
