Several members of Stage Kids started playing together in middle school, although the San Diego sextet didn’t get serious until after their 2008 high school graduation. Perhaps this long-term chemistry explains why their noodly riffs and complex percussion arrangements are so hard to categorize. “People have called us a lot of different things, but math-rock is probably the front-runner above progressive and ‘jazzy,’” says guitarist Jarryd Arcelao. “It’s basically various melodic guitar and keyboard riffs atop intricate drum work with plenty of stop-and-go parts as we please.”
