Though friends (and guitarists) James Ward and Ryan White did not know it would come to fruition 10 years later, they had “always talked about doing a band with [White] singing” while playing together in a hardcore band in 2001. “We all have been doing bands for a while for lots of different reasons, but Canvas started because we all just wanted to jam together,” says Ward. He describes Canvas’ sound as ‘90s rock “with a singer who can actually sing.” Ward lived in Philadelphia last year—which he admits slowed band productivity—but he hopes his move to the band’s Connecticut headquarters will put them back on track.
