Biography

The Biblical phrase “the power and the glory” is the appropriate catch-all term to describe the energy and attitude of Christian technical metalcore act August Burns Red. Formed in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 2002, ABR—guitarists JB Brubaker and Brent Rambler, drummer Matt Greiner, bassist Jordan Tuscan and then-vocalist Jon Hershey—began crafting a sound that was equal parts aggressive and musically complex. 2005 was a crucial year in ABR’s  development with the band replacing Hershey with vocalist Josh McManness and signing with Solid State/Tooth & Nail to record their debut album, Thrill Seeker with Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. While Thrill Seeker was an admirable debut, arguably its biggest accomplishment was garnering the attention of singer Jake Luhrs. A huge fan of the band, Luhrs heard ABR parted ways with McManness and were looking for a replacement. He drove 13 hours from his South Carolina home to eastern Pennsylvania to nail the audition. In addition to gaining Luhrs in 2006, the band recruited Dustin Davidson to replace Tuscan on bass. ABR’s second album (the first with Luhrs and Davidson onboard) was 2007’s Messengers, which went far to raise the bar in the contemporary Christian metalcore scene. ABR’s third album, 2009’s Constellations was just as out-of-this-world as its title hinted, with Greiner’s indefatigable drumming and Rambler and Brubaker’s guitar work shoring up Luhrs’ commanding performances. In late September 2010, Solid State issued a live album, Home, the perfect sonic appetizer for ABR’s slot on the AP Tour Fall. With a killer band and a positive outlook in tow, Luhrs knows where August Burns Red’s focus lies. “People that like this band are one of the most important things to me,” he told AP in late summer of 2010. “I love handing out the microphone and letting them sing, and I love being available to them afterward. If I could communicate that the things that hold you are only clasps around your ankle and you can break out so easily, then I think I’d be happy.”
