Biography
The great thing about punk rock in all its myriad forms is that most of the major characters in the scene come from the most unlikely places. Davison, Michigan’s entry in the contemporary-hardcore sweepstakes is Craig Owens, a singer whose vocal mastery, emphatic lyrics, engaging showmanship and manic work ethic have earned him prime real estate in the hearts of many fans. In 2001, Owens (alongside high school bud/keyboardist Bradley Bell), started the Chiodos Bros., who then shortened their name to Chiodos and signed to Equal Vision after a successful trilogy of self-released EPs. Owens fronted the band for two full-length releases, All’s Well That Ends Well (2005) and the hardcore cabaret-tinged Bone Palace Ballet (2007). In addition to writing, recording and touring with Chiodos, Owens also found the time to launch a pop-based side project called Cinematic Sunrise who released a mini-LP for Equal Vision; convene Isles & Glaciers, a post-hardcore supergroup featuring members of Emarosa, Pierce The Veil, Underminded and the Receiving End Of Sirens; participate in the Sound Of Animals Fighting (code name: “The Ram”); and embark on several solo acoustic tours. In September 2009, Chiodos fired Owens from the band: Undaunted, Owens continued to perform acoustic shows and write music. He has since signed with Pete Wentz’s Decaydance label and is currently working with a new band featuring guitarist Nick Martin (of Cinematic Sunrise and Isles & Glaciers) and drummer Aaron Stern (Matchbook Romance). “I may have a tough façade, but it’s just self-defense, really,” Owens told AP in 2008. “I’m just a good midwestern kid, no matter how intelligent and bad-ass a rock star you want to push me off to be.”
