Biography
Although they’ve been embraced by music fans who unabashedly proclaim themselves as “emo,” Marysville, Michigan, outfit Every Avenue’s songs are more in line with ’70s classic rock and the mainstream radio pop that permeated the ’90s. Forming in 2003 with a lineup of David Strauchman (who replaced vocalist James Beesley early in the band’s history), Jason Letkiewicz (guitar), Josh Randall (guitar), Cameron Grenstiner (bass) and Michael Govaere (drums), the band self-released two EPs, 2004’s self-titled debut and 2006’s This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things, before getting the attention of Fearless Records. Prior to EA’s signing with the label, Letkiewicz received a college scholarship and left the band; he was replaced by Jimmie Deeghan. Every Avenue’s 2008 debut full-length, Shh. Just Go With It, displayed some melodic smarts (especially the single “Where Were You?”), proving the band were worthy contenders in America’s emo-pop scene. Grenstiner quit after recording the album; he was replaced by Matt Black, who joined EA just in time to share stages with the likes of All Time Low, Hit The Lights and Mayday Parade in support of Shh. When it came time to record the follow-up during the spring of 2009, Govaere resigned and was replaced by Dennis Wilson.
In November 2009, the band released Picture Perfect, a record that sounded as familiar as your older brother’s record collection, but still current enough to rock the worlds of your Warped Tour buds. The music’s stylistic intentions are also indicative of the band’s personal philosophy, something the members collectively arrived upon while on tour. “I won’t say any names or anything like that, but certain bands we’ve toured with don’t play their instruments,” Strauchman told AP in 2010, prior to Every Avenue’s stint on the spring 2010 AP Tour. “There are bands whose most important member is their computer, and the most important thing to that band is what they wear and what they look like onstage. That’s the band we don’t want to be.”
