Biography
Had Christofer Drew—known to your hard drive as Never Shout Never—been born 50 years ago, he might’ve hitchhiked his way from his Joplin, Missouri, home to the original Woodstock festival, simultaneously soaking up and spreading around good vibes. After a shoulder injury tabled his plans to become a pro tennis player, the singer discovered his father’s Beatles and Bob Dylan records and began teaching himself guitar. He started writing songs and in 2007, became an internet sensation after uploading some tracks onto MySpace. The international response to his whimsical folk-pop was impressive and soon he was seeking out management, as well as releasing his music through the new digital clearinghouse Tunecore, where artists could put their digital downloads for sale, bypassing any record label involvement. After a series of internet-only EPs (Demo-Schmemo, Yippee and Me And My Uke), Drew created his own imprint in 2008, called Loveway, releasing The Summer EP, produced by Hellogoodbye founder Forrest Kline and featuring the fan-favorite, ukulele-powered track “Happy.” The following year, he signed to Warner Bros., who issued his Butch Walker-produced, major-label bow What Is Love? in January. But the singer isn’t entirely dedicated into breezy, heartfelt pop: Drew also has an alter-ego project, Eatmewhileimhot!, which features his touring band poking fun at the metal and hardcore scenes. Regardless of whatever avenue he takes musically, Drew has one priority. “My No. 1 goal is to make music that makes people think and love,” Drew told AP prior to embarking on the 2010 AP Tour. “I don’t want it to be about me; I want it to be about everything else.”
