Biography

Decades ago, Dayton, Ohio, was a satellite headquarters for indie-rock cool, with bands like Guided By Voices and Brainiac holding court. Just like countless groups before them, Christian metalcore mavericks the Devil Wears Prada cut their teeth in dirty warehouse practice spaces in the city, but they had both the drive and vision to become a high-volume juggernaut in modern metal. Forming in 2005, TDWP—vocalist Mike Hranica, guitarists Chris Rubey and Jeremy DePoyster, bassist Andy Trick, synth op James Baney and drummer Daniel Williams—took their name from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel on life as an assistant to a demanding fashion magazine editor, but the band members prefer to interpret the title as an anti-materialist screed. Not long after forming, they self-released their first demo, Patterns Of A Horizon; the tracks were later re-recorded in 2006 (with two new songs added) when the band signed with Rise Records, who reissued the tracks as the band’s first proper debut album, Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord. In 2007, their second album, Plagues, found TDWP tightening up even harder on fan favorites like “HTML Rulez D00d” and “Don’t Dink And Drance.” Their breakthrough 2009 release, With Roots Above And Branches Below (their first for Ferret Music), was a major step in the Devil Wears Prada’s career trajectory, maintaining all of the power and velocity of their previous releases while adding a bit more nuance via Baney’s atmospheric electronics and Williams’ rhythmic ideas. The combined force of the disc and its attendant touring schedule gained TDWP a groundswell of new fans, many of which voted them Band Of The Year in AP’s year-end review of 2009.

Before the Devil Wears Prada commenced recording their major-label debut for Warner Bros. in 2010, they recorded a five-track concept record for Ferret, titled Zombies—which is ironic: Most artists will tell you they write about “what they know.” Given the Prada-wearers’ drive and dedication to get things done, the last thing these guys know about is being dead, be it physically, creatively or spiritually. “I hope that people can say we’re a hard-working band and we put passion in everything we do,” guitarist DePoyster told AP in late 2009. “Regardless of what people care about what we have to say, you can’t deny we put our whole hearts into everything. I just hope we’ll be remembered for that passion.”
