Biography

The Summer Set mythology begins in 2007 with Last Call For Camden, a local emo-rock outfit formed by brothers Stephen (bass) and John (guitar) Gomez, drummer Jessica Bowen and singer Kennedy Brock. When Brock jumped ship to play guitar in some band called the Maine (heard of ’em?), Bowen and the Gomez brothers discovered Brian Dales singing covers of the Format on MySpace. The newly named outfit the Summer Set—Dales, Bowen, the Gomez brothers and guitarist Dillon Morris (who was replaced by James Montgomery in spring 2008)—recorded a self-released EP (Love The Love You Have) and began bonding over everything from country-radio superstars to hip-hop hits (they’ve covered Usher’s “Love In This Club”). After releasing two EPs on the Militia Group label in 2008 (…In Color and Meet Me On The Left Coast) the band signed with Razor & Tie for their 2009 full-length debut, Love Like This. Loaded with enough killer hooks (“Chelsea”), wry lyrics (“The Boys You Do (Get Back At You)”) and callisthenic abandon to make even the most self-righteous hipster d-bag jump around, the disc’s good-time-party vibe came to life onstage during the Set’s run opening the 2010 AP Tour. When the Summer Set talk about it, they wouldn’t disagree—well, maybe. “The other day someone called us an Arizona posi-rock band,’” guitarist Montgomery told AP in 2009. “I didn’t know whether to say ‘Fuck you’ or not.” Dales shot back, “We are an Arizona posi-rock band. I just want to play positive music."
