I'm trying to turn a hobby of overanalysis and geeking out into a profession. My discovery of "punk" around the turn of the century led to a labor of love (and vice versa) in investigating all that it had to offer for someone with barely a respectable shred of musicianship.
I realized that I could perhaps contribute to this whole phenomenon by simply covering it in the written word. I first wrote for fledgling sites that went nowhere (ever hear of InfoPunks or KnifeParty? Didn't think so) before eventually being brought on board as the reviews editor for Punknews.org. Some people call us "the CNN of punk rock." Whatever.
Thanks to a fortunate connection, AP started throwing me bones in 2005 (AP 200: 100 Bands You Need To Know). From there I became what you might call a regular in the reviews section, also doing feature stories of varying size. That would eventually earn me enough wherewithal to be hired as the "head news poster" for the news section of AP's online arm in May 2008 when things began to get pretty serious around these digital parts. I also did a weekly Q&A where I interviewed colossal stars I never expected to ever interact with: Marky Ramone; Tom Delonge; Max Bemis; Chris Walla; etc. It was pretty awesome.
These days, I'm back to my ordinary freelance position for the magazine and continuing to handle all the reviews and varying exclusives for Punknews. Essentially, yeah, I'm competing with myself. Now that's what I call a free market.
