Position: West Coast Editor
HQ: Southern California
Ryan J. Downey's first 300 words for Alternative Press appeared in an issue with Scott Weiland on the cover (AP 117, to be exact).
In the years that followed, AP's West Coast Editor put together in-depth cover stories of his own, on a diverse group of artists, including Black Veil Brides, A Day To Remember, Sleeping With Sirens, Fall Out Boy, Asking Alexandria, Pierce The Veil, Falling In Reverse, Green Day, Coheed & Cambria and AFI.
Downey works as correspondent, producer and reporter for APTV and the AltPress site, as well. His worldwide exclusive interview with Tim Lambesis, the only in-depth Q&A with the troubled As I Lay Dying frontman, ran on the site in spring 2014. In the formative years of the modern metalcore movement, Downey fronted the band Burn It Down, whose solitary full-length album was awarded KKKK in Kerrang! and 4/5 in AP's very own pages back in November 2000.
In addition to his longtime work with AP, Downey has worked as correspondent, producer and writer for Billboard, IFC, MSNBC and MTV News. He's written for Huffington Post, SFGate and other publications. He's also the manager for AP-friendly bands, including The Dillinger Escape Plan and Demon Hunter.
Metallica, Morrissey/The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Into Another, Oasis, Candlemass, House Of Pain, The Cro-Mags, Megadeth, Integrity, Type O Negative, The Cure, Adam & The Ants, Billy Idol, Kiss It Goodbye, Bad Brains, Misfits/Samhain/Danzig, Iron Maiden, The Sex Pistols, My Dying Bride, The Cult, Guns N' Roses, Pulp, Duran Duran, Celtic Frost, Black Sabbath, Massive Attack, Portishead, Zao, Boogie Down Productions, Nas, The Stone Roses, Jeff Buckley, Alice In Chains, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Nick Cave comprise just a sampling of the artists responsible for some of Downey's favorite albums of all time.
