For as many naysayers and cynics out there, it seems that what you do still matters to a lot people.
Thank you, we think so too. Some of it is probably my fault; we announced an album title a year ago and people were excited. I completely understand why, because I was excited too. I knew the album title and I said it one night at a show, so it spread. On top of that, we did that countdown on our website. I thought it was clear because it said we were still recording. I didn’t think people would assume that we were actually putting out the album. We gave out the song “Violence” for free because of how long it took, and people wanted new music. The record wasn’t even halfway recorded then. I’m not kidding you, “Violence” is not even a mixed version of that song. We just put it out: We wanted people to be happy. Everybody assumed from there that because we put out a single, the record would be coming out within a month or so. That was never the plan. We just wanted to give them new music for waiting. Everybody took it so wrong, and it kind of sucked.
At the same time, I do understand because this whole thing has been so unnatural [in regards to] what people expect for album releases. This is so unconventional and not planned out.
The House Party Tour with All Time Low, Pierce The Veil and the Wonder Years kicks off next week. What can fans expect for these larger-scaled arena shows?
If you’re a kid growing up right now, in high school or whatever, this is going to be the show that I wish I could have seen growing up. We put a lot of time into it. We were talking about investing in yourself and bleeding money. Well… [Laughs.] This is another thing we did for the fans. We’ve always viewed shows as something that should be fun and interactive. You go to an A Day To Remember show, and we do stupid, funny things that help make the crowd feel like a part of the show. This is going to be, by far, the craziest show this style of music has ever seen. We showed up in Colorado a couple days ago for pre-production, and I’m actually terrified. We’re putting on such a big show that I’m legitimately scared out of my mind. To see all this crazy shit being set up and knowing what is going to happen at these shows, I can’t even believe we are doing this. If you’ve ever liked A Day To Remember, and you’ve ever cared about seeing us live, this is the time to do it because you never know. Maybe this guy does stop us from moving forward with our career and does crush us in court because he has more money than us. You need to know as an A Day To Remember fan, this is the biggest and coolest show we will have ever done in our entire career. And if this is the way we go out, then we are going out with a fucking bang. Let’s just say the name “House Party Tour” will make a lot of sense when you see the actual show. Expect to be blown away.
Last question: Will Tom Denney ever stop trying to tattoo his entire body?
He’ll pretty much stop when he has to, I guess. He doesn’t have much room left, so… We were actually all on this big group text, and he sent a picture of his new face tattoo, saying, “Yeah, I should probably chill out for awhile with the tattoos.” I immediately texted him back, “Like you have an option…” [Laughs.] There is no room left.
