Save Ferris release first single in 15 years, “New Sound” ft. the Specials’ Neville Staple

January 19 2017, 12:00 PM EST By Taylor Scott

Orange County ska-punks Save Ferris were a topic of mainstream success in the late '90s. They had hits on the radio, toured constantly and appeared in television shows and movies such as 10 Things I Hate About You. Now, after 15 years, they are making their long awaited return to the music scene with a brand new EP and a full U.S. tour.

"New Sound," featuring ska royalty Neville Staples of the Specials, is the first single off their upcoming EP Checkered Past available February 10, same as the kickoff date for their tour. Produced by Oingo Boingo bassist John Avila, the EP follows a successful PledgeMusic campaign where the band offered handwritten lyric sheets, signed CDs and much more to fund the new effort. You can preorder the EP here.

“I’m so excited for everyone to hear the first Save Ferris single in almost 15 years and just in time for our U.S. tour!" says frontwoman Monique Powell. "It’s an honor to have my idol and friend Neville from the Specials on this one.  And this is just the start!  Welcome to the new sound!”

Embracing ska and dub roots, "New Sound" offers a refreshing and modern feel while remaining true to the ska genre. The groovy rhythm perfectly highlights Powell's powerful vocal melody in the chorus and, like the song intends, is so catchy it spreads like flames. "Comin' down to get you, and once it gets you it will take you away, we gonna burn this one down to the ground!"

"Since this incarnation of Save Ferris first played together, the band and I have been working on new music, arranging schedules and selectively playing local shows to get ready for a tour." says Powell, "I have had to tell our fans to 'be patient, I promise it'll happen' for too long now! But now here we are. I can't believe we've made it this far....and now you get to see us in a town near you. For the first time in 15 years, Save Ferris is coming to get you! Are you ready?”
