Frontman MICHAEL “JAG” JAGMIN tells the stories behind each song on A SKYLIT DRIVE’s new album, Identity On Fire.
Carry The Broken
This opening track is a call to our followers and friends. We’re calling them to unite with us. Anyone that feels lost or out of place can find a home somewhere. You just have to search.
Too Little Too Late
"Too Little Too Late" is about the feeling of the whole world coming down on you, but never letting it get the best of you. We drive ourselves on the idea of doing exactly what we want to do, and what makes us happy no matter what anyone says. For us, sometimes the pressures of performing and doing the right thing for a crowd can be pretty intense, but in the end, we pull through it and do our thing. You just have to find strength in yourself and the ones around you that care about you. It's our way of saying with all that you do, "Don't ever give up!"
XO Skeleton
"XO Skeleton" is about how difficult things can get when you’re away from home and can't deal with issues back happening there. Nothing is more frustrating than wanting to be there for someone or fix something in person when it's not a possibility. We've all been in this situation so many times with girlfriends. Lots and lots of fights will happen on tour, and it's harder to heal what's been broken when you’re away. Also, there are so many great people we meet on the road, but there are also the "ghosts" that are only out to make problems for us. It's a whole new challenge figuring out who is real and fake.
Conscience Is A Killer
This song isn't as straightforward as the others. It's kind of like being in the killing seat, talking to your killer. You’re telling him you understand what he's going through, but that he needs to open his eyes to survive in this world. Remembering the good times and holding on to those memories can help so much in hard times. You should always go for everything you want and desire, but sometimes the chase will lead you down a road you can't get off of.
Ex Marks The Spot
“Ex Marks The Spot" is the place inside you that tries to feel normal among all the turmoil in the world. Things can get extremely hectic out on the road. You'll be confronted with situations you might not ever see at home, but you still have to either find your way around them or through them. This song also has its intimate side that gets a little sexual, which at times is also a part of meeting new people out on the road. It can be hard deciphering what's right and wrong, but even when feeling normal seems impossible, it's still there somewhere.
The Cali Buds
This song is the song for all our Cali friends. It’s the brotherhood song. We all live in California, so we have a ton of friends out there. Friendship means more to us than anything. We'd fight for our friends any day. We want all of our friends to know how much they mean to us and that all we want is to stick by their side through thick and thin... even if you're not from California.
Your Mistake
This song is our way of saying, "We can tell you what's it's like to live how we do, but until you experience it, you won't understand." It’s about the things that happen behind our closed doors, the people that become a part of us and the bonds we make. It can all be explained in stories, but you have no clue until you live it.
Fuck The System
This one's about realizing what you have in life, not taking it for granted and living life to the fullest. Take any opportunity that comes your way. Fuck the system and what it says you should do. Do what you want. When things seem rough, just remember that no matter how dark the world can seem, there's always a lighter side around the corner. But one of the hardest realizations is sometimes you have to make that light.
500 Days Of Bummer
We've all missed how things "were" at some point. This one is all about that. Sometimes you feel like you've given all that you can give, but it's never enough. That feeling can really drag you down, but you need to see through it to the big picture. Even when you feel so extremely separated from everyone, if you fight the good fight, you'll be the victor in the end.
Tempt Me, Temptation
Sex is all over this one. This is us pretty much saying, "We can't lose." Even when we might be drowning, we're winning. It's about intimate moments, the ups and downs of being with someone and the sometimes-depressing realities of it all. It's just life.
Identity On Fire
This song is a total mental breakdown about when you don't even come close to realizing what's right and wrong anymore. It's that point in your life when you're your own worst enemy or your own worst nightmare. It's the ultimate search for yourself and finding who you really are. It's like starting over and making your own identity.
If You Lived Here You'd Be Home
This one is a thank you to everyone that's ever influenced the good in our lives. The point of view is from if we were already gone from this world. It also dips into what it might be like to look back on your life and question all of your regrets and accomplishments. We really wanted to end the album on a positive note. alt
