HQ: Flint, MI NOW PLAYING: My Everest(SEARCH AND RESCUE) THE STORY SO FAR: By mid-2005, the Swellers were providing the kids of Flint, Michigan-a city notorious for its economic recession thanks to Michael Moore-something high-energy to believe in. And the melodic, punchy punk outfit are proud of their roots. "We built our following from the ground up [around Flint]," says vocalist/guiarist Nick Diener, who originally created the band with drummer/sibling Jonathan in 2002. The Swellers eventually rounded out their lineup with bassist Lance Nelson and guitarist Garret Burgett, then patiently waited for half of the band to graduate high school before hitting the road full-time. WHY SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Only one member of the skate-punk-centric band-who collectively cite NOFX and Weezer as influences-is of legal drinking age, but the burgeoning hype that surrounded the Swellers in their hometown caused them to grow up fast. "[Being so young] people would tell us, 'You're the next big thing!,'" says Jonathan Diener. "I thought [we] would sign to a major label when I was 15 years old." But the band's delayed dreams of an early call-up to the rock big leagues didn't impede their drive. "We haven't been in school for a year now and we don't plan on going back until we decide touring full-time isn't for us," Nick says. "And we're just getting started." Brian Shultz |
