HQ: Montreal, Quebec, Canada NOW PLAYING: Once Only Imagined (CENTURY MEDIA) THE STORY SO FAR: Originally known as the Tempest, French-Canadian metal quartet the Agonist marries frontwoman Alissa White-Gluz's passion for animal rights and environmentalism with a sound that contains elements of extreme metal, jazz and hardcore. Curiously, the band achieved national exposure in their homeland last year when White-Gluz became a semi-finalist on Canadian Idol. "I kind of did that as a joke and then it went too far," she says, laughing. "I never wanted to win or even go on. It was great to be with people from across the country with similar interests, but I can't really say they were similar outside of singing. People were like, 'Oh, you're into metal...like Metallica!'" WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Because though they're female-fronted, the Agonist have more balls than James and Lars have mustered in two decades. Taking inspiration from William Blake's incendiary poem "The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell," their debut album, Once Only Imagined, shares that script's dynamic philosophical aesthetics and, significantly, the strength of its convictions. "The line is that, 'What is now believed was Once Only Imagined,'" explains White-Gluz. "People see reality for what it is and think they can't change it. But people [also] thought the world was flat. It's about not believing something until you know why you believe it." Tristan Staddon YOU LIKE?
