HQ: Dallas, TX NOW PLAYING: Fables From A Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True (SERJICAL STRIKE) THE STORY SO FAR: Prior to recording Fables From A Mayfly, the studio was an unknown setting for DIY veterans and prog-rockers Fair To Midland. So when it came time to produce their first proper LP, the quintet found the process somewhat unnatural. "We aren't really used to being the in the studio," says frontman Darroh Sudderth. "We're much more of a live band and that's what we've relied on to get us where we've gotten." In fact, it's their live prowess that landed them their spot on Serjical Strike Records after its namesake, System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian, witnessed two of their roof-ripping performances last year in Los Angeles. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Everything about Fables is huge-no, gargantuan. Sudderth has the vocal capacity to flood a European soccer stadium oscillating between Anthony Green-esque highs and Philip Anselmo's guttural lows. Instrumentally, FTM's sound is equally chaotic, mirroring the eclectic tastes of each member ranging from country to industrial, stoner rock to nothing at all. (Sudderth says guitarist Cliff Campbell "doesn't even really listen to music.") But it's this strange brew that makes Fair To Midland unique. "Trying to mesh all those [musical sub-genres] in there, that's what results in the 'epic' nature of the songs." Chris French YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: DREDG / DREAM THEATER / PORCUPINE TREE |
