NOW PLAYING: Wanna Do The Wild Plastic Brane Love Thing? (WICKED COOL)

THE STORY SO FAR: The Stabilisers would've been perfectly happy rocking British pubs in relative obscurity with their brand of high-energy garage punk. When a copy of their last album, Wanna Do The Wild Plastic Brane Love Thing?, made it onto the home stereo of E Street Band guitarist "Little" Steven Van Zandt, he signed the band to his Wicked Cool label, creating a compilation out of the band's previous recordings while keeping the name of the full-length. "It's his version of what we sound like I suppose," opines guitarist Allan Crockford. "Some of that stuff we had recorded before we'd even played a gig-the newest stuff on there is two years old. [His choices] are remarkably cohesive, though."

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Because their potent mix of class of '77 Britpunk and new wave is the most fun you can have without diet pills crumbled into energy drinks. There's also something Crockford calls "the Medway ethos," which flies directly in the face of today's Pro-Tooled punks. "We don't rehearse and do demos," he says. "If you've got songs, record them and get 'em out as soon as possible. If you don't record your first batch of songs, you'll lose something forever. We don't think too hard about what we're doing. When you analyze things, they'll slip through your fingers. I think the songs that come to a band in 15 minutes are the ones that stay with you." Jason Pettigrew
