HQ: Brooklyn, NY NOW PLAYING: The Forms (THREESPHERES; threespheres.com) THE STORY SO FAR: The Forms, named loosely for a theory in Plato's Allegory Of The Cave, march to their own click track-and they like it that way. Not quite post-hardcore, indie rock or predictable, the four-piece-vocalist/guitarist Alex Tween, guitarist Brendan Kenny, bassist Jackson Kenny and drummer Matt Walsh-released their 2003 debut Icarus to critical acclaim despite not fitting neatly in one scene. But Tween admits they enjoy doing things their own way-like recording their self-titled sophomore album over 50-days with zero days off. "I wouldn't recommend any other bands doing what we did," says Tween. "It's not for the faint of heart." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Because the Forms aren't different for the sake of being different-they just don't sound quite like anything else. Hushed vocals swell into screams while mathy piano and guitar arpeggios scatter under 5/4 beats. It's simple, yet proggy. Their musical eccentricities also bleed into their work ethic-ask Steve Albini, who produced Icarus. Tween says, "We were the only band to make [Albini] do one take 58 times to get it right. We accidentally erased the first take and spent 57 more trying to get that magic back. When we finally got it, he just said sarcastically, 'you just saved the record.' But we're like that." -Casey Lynch YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: SHUDDER TO THINK / SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE / SHELLAC |
