HQ: Worcester, MA NOW PLAYING: Rise Or Die Trying (I SURRENDER; isurrenderrecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: For most kids in Worcester, Massachusetts, the music world begins and ends at the Worcester Palladium. It was there that the fledgling members of Four Year Strong-Dan O'Connor (vocals/guitar), Alan Day (guitar/vocals) and Jake Massucco (drums)-found the itch to make music after witnessing the likes of New Found Glory and Blood For Blood. "[We] got together and just started fooling around with music stuff," says O'Connor. After high school, Joe Weiss (bass) and Josh Lyford (synthesizer) were brought on board and the pop-punks signed with I Surrender Records. They may have spent part of this year touring with the Starting Line, but the highlight of 2007 came when Four Year Strong sold out their beloved Worcester Palladium. "I made it to the point that I thought was impossible when I was a kid," says O'Connor. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: FYS take the best of New England hardcore and mix it with pop-inclined influences. The result is a sound that's raw but concise, grinding but fun. Also apparent on their recently released debut Rise Or Die Trying is the band's ability to take a sour situation (like a breakup) and turn it into something that listeners can comisserate with (note the song "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Hell"). After all, says O'Connor, "We're just a bunch of guys who like to party and have fun." -Kelly Delaney YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: ALL TIME LOW / SET YOUR GOALS / HIT THE LIGHTS |
