HQ: Fremont, CA NOW PLAYING: Until We Have Faces EP (Negative Progression; negativeprogression.com) THE STORY SO FAR: In the time it took you to grow those killer emo bangs, tender-aged five-piece the Subtle Way have risen from the San Francisco outskirts to burgeoning screamo stardom. Formed by Jamie Tahirkheli (vocals) and Jason Miller (guitar/keyboard) while in junior high, they grew into the Subtle Way proper only a year-and-a-half ago. Although they play shows (with the likes of A Skylit Drive and Underminded) and record material (see their latest Negative Progression EP), being 19 years old and enrolled in colleges across California means they've still got some choices to make. "Once things get a little more serious, which it seems like they're starting to, we'll have to take off school to tour," says Tahirkheli. "Once that [time] comes, our parents are going to be a little more iffy about it." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Evolving from their starter sound that aped the Thrice and Poison the Well, the Subtle Way managed to swiftly craft their own melodic screamo style-more violent and slightly more experimental than those influences, respectively. Now they just need to jumpstart their reckless rockstar ethos. "We started trying to write songs in Jason's dad's office really late at night," says Tahirkheli. "But when we were unloading stuff, the silent alarm went off. The cops ended up coming a couple times and got really mad at us for being there so late." -Emily Zemler YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE?
