NOW PLAYING: Separation Sunday (FRENCH KISS; frenchkissrecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: After the 2000 breakup of Minneapolis indie icons Lifter Puller, vocalist Craig Finn moved to Brooklyn, dusted off his vinyl copy of Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak and formed the Hold Steady with Lifter Puller bassist Tad Kubler on guitar. On their new album, Separation Sunday, the Hold Steady take their classic-rock romps to the next level, augmenting their attack with organ, female backing vocals and, of course, Finn's slurred, spoken-word tirades. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Because Lifter Puller have only gained popularity since their breakup (see the Atmosphere song "Lift Her Pull Her" for proof)-and besides, what other indie-rock band do you know of who sound like AC/DC fronted by a drunken Minneapolis townie ranting about hoodrats? "Any good rock band, in my mind, has a certain element of comedy," Finn explains. "We certainly do, and I think that's important." -Jonah Bayer YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE? Thin Lizzy / Early Man / AC/DC |
