HQ: Dunedin, New ZealandNOW PLAYING: Promises Promises (S.A.F.; safrecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: After making an international name for themselves with relentless touring and their Steve Albini-produced 2005 debut, New Zealand punk trio Die! Die! Die! are poised for breakthrough. The trio (frontman Andrew Wilson, bassist Lachlan Anderson and drummer Michael Prain) recently played the main stage during the Big Day Out tour in Australia and New Zealand and are prepping to play new tracks at next month's South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Don't count on the hype going to their heads, though. "[Our live show is] quite honest, you know?" says Wilson. "It's not contrived. That's what I think, anyway. I just know that we don't think about it." [Laughs.] WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Their sophomore album Promises Promises is a collection of punk/post-punk tracks that step away from their blistering debut toward nuance, melody and flow. Wilson says part of the difference comes from the length of time the band had to record: Three days for their debut compared to 12 days this time. While D!D!D! are ready for you to embrace their new tunes, Wilson poses one condition: "I really hope people enjoy it and they get it the right way and don't get it wrong." How would one "get it wrong"? "It's not just a bunch of noise," Wilson insists. "I don't want to be known as just a blast of noise." -Rachel Lux YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: PIXIES / BLACK FLAG / MCLUSKY |
