Foals

HQ: Oxford, England
NOW PLAYING: Antidotes (SUB POP; subpop.com)
THE STORY SO FAR: Formed in 2005 from the ashes of cult math rockers the Edmund Fitzgerald, the Oxford, England, five-piece Foals have quickly risen from relative obscurity to semi-stardom in the U.K. Regrettably, early attention stemmed from frontman Yannis Philippakis' fascination with a dashing tennis phenom after a casual remark became the focal point of a press release. "Now all people want to know about is my fanatical obsession with Andy Roddick," says Philippakis. "It's interesting to see how five words out of 150 are taken, warped and given to you as a slogan that precedes everything your band does."
WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Despite being touted as the new Radiohead by excitable hacks, the band haven't let the attention change them. Foals left early singles off their debut record Antidotes and re-recorded parts (against the wishes of their producer) so that it fit their vision. Part nerdy indie rock, part sassy pop, part subtle electro and part a million other things, Antidotes is a statement that Foals can't be pigeonholed-or held back. They even managed to write new material in a supermarket parking lot after a recent bus crash left them stranded for nine hours. "We just got all our equipment out and played," Philippakis says. "Some security people were pretty bewildered by the array of old technology, but I think they realized we weren't a threat." - Andrew Kelham
