HQ: Long Island, NYNOW PLAYING: Villians (SUMERIAN; sumerianrecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: Stray From The Path were born of the great American tradition: Five restless dudes listening to records, going to shows and jamming in a garage. By March 2001, after seeing fellow Long Islanders gaining attention in the world of hardcore, they were motivated to become more than mere tadpoles in their hometown scene. "We noticed that a few Long Island bands were starting to break out," says guitarist Tom Williams. "We thought, 'Hey, we can do that, too!'" Within a month of their first practice, SFTP played their first show and began snagging slots opening for the likes of As I Lay Dying and Misery Signals. A string of dates with Cincinnati's the Burning Season led to a deal with Sumerian Records, who promptly nabbed Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou to produce their debut full-length, Villains. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: The band-vocalist Drew York, guitarists Williams and Wes Young, bassist Ryan Thompson and drummer Justin Manas-have no interest in being labeled "this"-core or "that"-core. "We try to have no boundaries," says Williams. "If we want to do a fast, punk feel into a metalcore breakdown, we totally can." Where Stray From The Path are going, they don't need subgenres. "We just say that we're really fast, really loud, and really heavy and hopefully people get the idea that way." -Ryan Wasoba YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: BOTCH / AMERICAN NIGHTMARE / ELYSIA |
