HQ: Fort Collins, CONOW PLAYING: Madeline (WIND-UP; winduprecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: Radio rotation was the last thing on songwriter Sean Kennedy's mind when he enlisted bassist Johnny Schou and drummer Stefan Runstrom to create Fort Collins, Colorado, rockers Tickle Me Pink. "I just have to make music," says Kennedy. "It's a form of therapy to me." But when Denver radio station KTCL began transmitting the group's hard-hitting single "Typical" last year, Tickle Me Pink found themselves suddenly needing to make serious decisions-like signing to Wind-Up Records and adding a second guitarist (Steven Beck) after an amphitheater opening gig for Social Distortion inspired them to create a larger sound. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: An apt description for Tickle Me Pink is "radio-friendly," and they aren't offended by it. After all, the band's bombastic power pop is largely influenced by modern radio-rock standards like Rage Against The Machine and Third Eye Blind just as much as it is by punk icons like Descendents and At The Drive-In. "We were raised on alternative rock before being introduced to independent music," admits Kennedy, which explains why TMP songs are catchier than any guyliner-wearing emo outfit. "We want to be poppy and have big hooks. We want to be stuck in people's heads." (Eds. note: As this issue was going to press on July 1, bassist Johnny Schou was found dead in his home in Colorado. He was 22 years old.) -Ryan Wasoba YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: MATCHBOOK ROMANCE / THE RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS / FINCH |
