NOW PLAYING: Fear Is On Our Side (SECRETLY CANADIAN) THE STORY SO FAR: Though they were somewhat of a buzz band earlier this decade, thanks to a self-titled 2003 EP produced by Spoon's Britt Daniel, it took three years for I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness to capitalize on the hype and finally release Fear Is On Our Side, their long-awaited, Paul Barker (Ministry, Revolting Cocks)-produced full-length debut. So, what took them so long? "There's been all kinds of life things--divorces, marriages, arrests," singer/guitarist Christian Goyer says bluntly. "We're actually very level-headed, mellow people," he adds, "but for some reason, we've had this Mötley Crüe existence." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM:Because if there is only one atmospheric indie-rock band with an absurdly long name you should blog about this month, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness should be it. Two years ago, lots of major label A&R execs dug ILYBICD's pensive nü-gaze sound, but the band eventually ended up on tiny Indiana-based indie label Secretly Canadian, home to current underground darlings Antony & The Johnsons. "You're going to be able to be a band," Goyer says of the band's decision to stay independent. "Like, 'What's your job?' I'm in a band. 'Why?' Because I didn't sign with some big label that's going to fuck us." -Trevor Kelley YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: Interpol / Black Rebel Motorcycle Club / The Helio Sequence |
