NOW PLAYING: Haram (LOVITT) THE STORY SO FAR: Time on the road can either make or break a band, but when a band's members have already logged over 1,000 shows between them--mostly with one another--you know they're the real deal. Such is the case with Haram, the post-punk quartet comprised of guitarist/vocalist Matt Michel, guitarist Mike Taylor, bassist Jeff Kane and drummer Andy Gale. "All of us are used to this," says Michel while en route to a gig. "We've all toured with each other's bands before, so we know how we're gonna be. We all work our lives so we could do this now." This same diligence is the reason Haram are already making plans to support their artfully dissonant self-titled debut in Europe and Japan barely a year after playing their first show. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM:With a pedigree that includes former members of Majority Rule, Pg. 99, City Of Caterpillar, Malady and the Out_Circuit, Haram were able to unaffectedly build a mature, multifarious sound atop a base of DC-punk aesthetics. "We were trying to do something different from our other bands--I hope that comes across," says Michel. "[Our music is] an evolution from what we used to do." Taking their name from the Arabic word for "forbidden," Haram ironically choose to keep their own path open-ended. "There's no real end-game to playing punk music," says Michel. "As long as we like doing it, that's as long as we can do it."--Zena Tsarfin YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: Sonic Youth / The Ghost / Drive Like Jehu |
