HQ: New York, NY

NOW PLAYING: Ideal Lives (FRENCHKISS)

THE STORY SO FAR: One of many indie bands trying to get noticed in the New York music scene, Rahim hit a stroke of luck of hometown label Frenchkiss took notice of their post-punk rock and signed them. Getting their name, however, wasn't quite so simple. "We used to be called Radio Raheem, which is a character from Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing," drummer Philip Sutton says. "We found out there were, like, four other Radio Raheems. We just shortened it and un-Americanized it. Rahim actually means 'merciful' in Arabic, and on our older songs, that was kind of the theme."

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM:Both their 2005 EP and new album were recorded by the legendary J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), and they have been hailed as one of the only recent bands to successfully connect the D.C. post-punk of the '80s and '90s. But don't judge a book by its cover: Rahim are a lot less serious than their music makes them out to be. "The music we write is really serious, but in real life we have the maturity level of 11-year-old boys," Sutton says with a laugh. "Potty humor is our main source of laughter. I think we come off as a really serious band--musically, I guess we are-but if you talk to us, we're dirty little boys." --Emily Zemler
