NOW PLAYING: When All That's Left Is You (EPIC)

THE STORY SO FAR: For a while, the members of Quietdrive were in two separate bands together. First, they'd practice for two hours as Quietdrive, then the same five guys would practice for two hours as Sneaker 2 Bombs-their other incarnation. This went on until finally, one day, someone said, "Hey, why not just be one band we can focus on?" Good plan, said Epic, who'd been on the fence about both projects. Cutting back to one band also gave them extra time to work the internet mojo. As guitarist Matt Kirby explains it, getting signed to Epic, with its roster of approximately seven billion artists, made it that much more imperative to do things the label would notice, like making the front page of MySpace. "This is our job," says Kirby. "So we're putting in eight to 10 hours a day."

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM:In a perfect world, says Kirby, everyone would know 'em. After all, the whole point of this record was to make themselves "available to the masses." Hell, they even turned to hit machine Butch Walker for production and advice on fine-tuning the radio-friendly appeal of their earnest yet big-hooked guitar-pop. "We wanted to really develop our songs," says Kirby. "And Butch squeezed us in for a few days right before he left on the Avril Lavigne tour." The result is an album that's more Simple Plan than "Sk8er Boi." --Ed Masley
