HQ: Long Island, NY NOW PLAYING: Envy On The Coast EP (PHOTO FINISH; photofinishrecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: After forming in high school around a mandate of making great, gimmick-free music, Envy On The Coast spent the next two years cutting their teeth at every Long Island rock venue their barely-legal status could get them into. After befriending producer Bryan Russell and recording their six-song debut at his Brooklyn apartment, the band came out determined to impact others through music the same way they were. "I didn't have friends in high school," remembers vocalist Ryan Hunter. "I kept to myself and was ridiculed for it. But now I'm touring with my best friends and most of those [ridiculers] are working in gas stations." WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Though their debut features flashes of piano balladry and fiery post-hardcore potential, it's the band's impeccable rock instincts that set them apart from the pack. Unlike other upstart bands of noble intent, Envy On The Coast put their faith in inner strength and perseverance to practice, playing anytime, anywhere for anyone who'll listen. "When we say we love playing shows, we mean it," says Hunter. "We've played a bar mitzvah; we've got a Sweet 16 coming up. We've even driven to Maryland to do a girl's birthday. We just really love to play. It's our favorite thing to do." - Tristan Staddon YOU LIKE? YOU'LL LIKE: LORENE DRIVE / INCUBUS / HALIFAX |
