HQ: Nashville, TNNOW PLAYING: Mirabilia (EYEBALL; eyeballrecords.com) THE STORY SO FAR: My Epiphany’s relationship with Eyeball Records began when the band befriended a couple of then-unknown acts, namely Thursday and My Chemical Romance—the latter of which saw their van break down on their first tour and were put up for three days by My Epiphany vocalist John Swingset. Four years after the band’s inception, My Epiphany’s Eyeball debut, Mirabilia, melds elements of electronica (à la Björk) with Thursday’s brand of progressive hardcore—Eyeball owner/Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly even lends backing vocals to two of the tracks. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW ’EM: Because along with acts like the Pink Spiders and Scatter The Ashes, My Epiphany are putting Nashville on the punk-rock map, despite the sentiment of autobiographical—and infectious—tracks like “Small Town.” “Living in a small town where you feel like nothing matters generates honest art,” explains Swingset. “[That song] was a reflection on [the fact that] I’ve been broke and I’ve been penniless, but I’m well-traveled. That’s the tradeoff we choose to make.” —Jonah Bayer YOU LIKE? YOU’LL LIKE: Deftones / Thursday / Vendetta Red |
