HQ: Phoenix, AZ NOW PLAYING: Small Steps, Heavy Hooves (EQUAL VISION) THE STORY SO FAR: You'd be right if you guessed that this sun-scorched quintet's bad play-on-words name is an indicator of a snarky sense of humor and quirky writing style. The five Dears (can we call them that?)-singer/guitarist Ian Metzger, bassist Chuckie Duff, drummer Mark Kulvinskas and guitarists/keyboardists Joel Marquard and P.J. Waxman-only started playing out a year or so ago, but you'd never know it. Their knack for creating alt-pop fit for both a bar or arena is uncanny. That's what happens when your principal songwriter can channel the spirit of Bob Dylan and harbors dental conspiracy theories. "What if every tooth in your mouth represented a different aspect of your personality?" poses Metzger. "And when you lose a tooth, maybe you lose a part of it?" WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Small Steps, Heavy Hooves brims with big pop choruses, sad chords and cheeky alliteration. Metzger is also proud to point out that every word in the title of "Skinned Knees And Gapped Teeth" (except "and") has a repeated letter. It's ironic that Metzger has an obsession with teeth-the whole album has fangs. Songs like the Cure-inspired "I'm Bored, You're Amorous" and the haunting "Hallelujah" will sink their sonic choppers into your eardrums, proving that these guys are more than just alt-rockers with a punny name. -Casey Lynch YOU LIKE?
