...is lookin' pretty good!

Dear AP,

As much as I bitch about the lack of administration in this here Mosh Pit, I really do enjoy your magazine and have quite a lot of respect for it.  That is my favorite band up there, and in a move that turned out to be quite prescient, you were the first national magazine to feature them on your cover back in late 2002.  You also deserve credit for the quality of your continued coverage.  You avoid the trite things like haircuts and tshirts and the band members' favorite colors while also remaining respectful of their privacy; not prying too hard for a salacious story or personal information.  I would say this extends beyond your coverage of AFI, indeed to all bands, I'm just a little more in tune with it here since I cannot say the same for other magazines that jumped on the cashwagon when STS blew up.  This fan appreciates it.  I'm sure this article will be no exception.  Looking forward to reading it.

Love,
Alyssa V.

Dear AFI,

I am slowly starting to see fans coming back around to Crash Love, and that makes me happy.  And while they are welcomed back with open arms of course, I just wanted you to know that I never gave up on you.  Not even for a picosecond.  Way to knock one out of the park, boys.

Love endlessly,

"Li from Boston"

ALSO:

ORAL HISTORY OF SDRE!!!!!!!!!!   WHEE!!! {hi Craig)

That list of 100 singles looks cool too.  I usually dig AP's lists like that.

Should be a good issue all around.

And considering a subscription since it's the same price as buying like 2 or 3 from the newsstands.

^I don't know how it is for Canada, but with a 2 year subscription it is just $10 a year for me.  I figure I would have picked up the Gaslight Anthem issue, whichever had that 'Band that Changed My Life' feature, and this one at least, so it's still more than worth it for me.

The only thing that bugs me about this cover is the way they photoshopped it, it looks like four photos taken separately and pasted together.  That's all good when you have members from multiple bands on one cover, but this is one cohesive unit and has been that way for over ten years.  Everyone looks great though so that's a really minor gripe.  Plus this is nice:

the best deal i got was before christmastime last year. instead of $12 or so for a 1 year subscription i got a 2 year subscription AND a gift sub for megan. all for 20. so it was pretty sweet. i dont know if theyre doing that again, probably something similar.

I do not approve of this Mr./Ms. Starr in your magazine, but I do appreciate the Oral History, AFI article, 100 singles thing and a cover with dudes who at least look like dudes as opposed to fourteen year old girls.

PS DAYM Hunter's eyes are blue!

I have seen too much.

^I feel that Hunter and Davey are making sexy eyes at the camera.  It could just be me; maybe I just WANT that to be so.  Adam looks as he does in most photos; he HATES photoshoots but he's still a handsome Jawbreaker-obsessed devil nonetheless.  Jade self described his role as such on his blog:

quote:

Someone always has to be the floating head in the back, I'm taking one for the team this time.

Lol.  Anyway, I got this today and I'm a happy girl. I've just skimmed most of it, and read the AFI article.  This magazine 'gets' this band, that's for sure.  I have more to say but don't want to post any spoilers for non-subscribers/those who haven't gotten their mag yet.  Perhaps I'll post more later in invisible ink.

The 100 singles feature is pretty cool.  Apparently I missed the link on this site to vote; I would have liked to.  Oh well, good list, and number one was a very very pleasant surprise!

Neeeever mind what I just said about voting; in my excitement over the cover story I missed the front page of that feature that lists who exactly voted, and that it was in fact not a public poll.

For the record, and due to the additional features I've seen on this website, I think it's kind of bullshit that certain few select band members who had eligible singles were allowed to vote, and indeed a remarkable display of hubris that some voted for themselves (some multiple times?).

But whatever, the list is still good and #1 is still amazing.

Thanks for all the feedback! Haircut 100 was an idea that came to me in
my sleep five months ago, and I can't believe it's finally done and in
peoples' hands -- it might seriously be my proudest moment in my 5+
years at AP, or at least is up there with getting Gaslight on the cover.

And people should read the Jeffree Star feature -- I was really surprised
at his story. I definitely wasn't convinced on doing a feature on him
beforehand, but afterward, I gotta say even though I don't enjoy his
music, I have a respect I didn't have previously.

^ I did read it, and I can see where you're coming from in regards to the 'respect' angle.  Dude has obviously taken a lot of shit for being who he is, and although I don't enjoy his music either, I can applaud him for sticking to that and being true to himself.  It's a good read.

However, toward the end of the article my respect starts to erode.  Dude doesn't seem to appreciate those who helped him out in the beginning.  I don't know; I guess remaining humble is a quality I hold in high regard, and I find that bit in stark contrast to the article that directly follows it.  One thing I'll always defend AFI on is their integrity.  I'm perfectly fine with the fact that some people think their music sucks, but I think Nick 13's testimonial in the cover story quite well demonstrates that they're awesome dudes who haven't changed on a personal level.  The fact that I can wear my DF hoodie to other shows; those of bands who knew them "back when," and talk to those band members and have them smile and say "AFI!  Awesome, we love those guys!" still means a lot to me.

so here's the final scene, when i finally come clean:

the haircut 100 was pretty sweet though, thought Sugar, were going down would be one, close. but pleasant surprise to see it was ATDI, especially since it meant MCR wasnt first.

^^I already knew about the cover story, so I have to say that was the most pleasant surprise about the whole issue!  Definitely cool.  So: One Armed Scissor for BEST single?  Yeah, YES!

Oh, and the little box on one of the pages that was like "Band with the most eligible songs that received no votes : From First to Last (6)" made me giggle.

This doesnt really have much to do with this months issue.
Nor do I believe that anyone at AP actually looks at this, besides Scott
who shows up like once ever blue moon.

I would like to see Track-by-Track in the magazine. This is something I
look forward to reading when my favorite bands are putting out new
albums.

I give this issue a thumbs up.
Only one though.  SDRE article should have taken over the space of that Cartel article because the kid from ATL is an obnoxious interviewer.

Thought for sure that The Middle would have been the top single.  I can not wait for the hell that will be trying to decide the "best" albums.

I have seen too much.

We won't be doing a "best of the decade" album countdown -- we
thought it would be easier and more fun to do a singles countdown
instead, and besides, everyone else does album countdowns. We're

You guys should do another special on the Pit! The kids who have spent countless of hours on here deserve some recognition.

Thank you for the Atreyu review.  I shudder to think I used to kind of like that band...eww.

And OH!  I want to read Hunter's book.

quote:

I feel like it's the best way to get out all these ideas that I have.  The thing I'm writing now,I've designed it to be...kind of like a garbage can, basically, for all of my stupid ideas.  It helps me, I guess, clear my head of a lot of things that have been floating around in it for a long time.

lolol

I wish got this article before I saw them; I would have loved to grill him about this.  Jade often gets the credit, but I think Hunter is the funniest member of AFI, just based off of personal experience.  My goodness, this book will be a great read.  I want.

edit: About the Mosh Pit thing; I remember a 'reader's occupation' of some sorts maybe five years ago, but don't remember if it was Pit-specific.  I just might not have noticed since I wasn't a member then.  I have every issue since AFI's first cover somewhere so if someone knows I might be able to find it

There was a special on the Mosh Pit back when the board was still black and I only lurked. It was a few years ago. I was still in high school so it was about 3+ years ago.

The issue had Senses Fail on the cover if that helps.

Congratulations kid, you've been invited to the best party ever thrown.
