Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, AFI, A7X take home VMAs
Alternative Press - Scott Heisel on 8/31/06 @ 11:57 PM - altpress.com
Such was proven by a slew of former AP cover stars, including Panic! At The Disco, the All-American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, AFI and Avenged Sevenfold, all walking home with a Moonman each, while fellow AP steadies Taking Back Sunday lost to the Jared Leto-led prog-punk act 30 Seconds To Mars in the MTV2 Award category.
The biggest surprise of the evening had to be Las Vegas dance-pop upstarts Panic! At The Disco who, after being nominated five times and being shut out all night long, stunned the crowd by winning the Video Of The Year award, beating out the likes of Christina Aguilera and Madonna to do it. Even more surprising was someone calling themselves "Six," who leapt onto the stage before Panic! could accept, grabbed the mic and launched into his own acceptance speech.
Panic!'s big brothers in Fall Out Boy won their second VMA in two years (they won the MTV2 award in 2005), this year walking away with the Viewer's Choice Award after conquering competitors like Kelly Clarkson and Rihanna.
Another upset came in the form of the All-American Rejects winning Best Group Video for "Move Along," not only beating out Panic! and FOB, but Gnarls Barkley and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band also performed a rousing rendition of the track earlier in the night.
Bay Area goth punks AFI took home the VMA for Best Rock Video, their second in their career (they previously won the MTV2 Award in 2003). Competition was fierce in this category, as well, with Davey Havok & Co. triumphing over 30 Seconds To Mars, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Panic! At The Disco and fellow Bay Area punk legends Green Day.
Southern California pop-metal quintet Avenged Sevenfold continued the upset trend by winning the Best New Artist In A Video moonman, defeating the likes of Angels & Airwaves, Panic! At The Disco and James Blunt. A left-field win if there ever was one, the band took the stage remarkably humbly, with drummer the Rev looking close to tears.
Those virtually shut out include Angels & Airwaves, who were up for three VMAS but won none; Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose seven nods turned up only one trophy; and Beck and Green Day, who both went 0-for-1.
The complete winners list is below.
