Comic-Con news and trailer roundup: ‘Walking Dead,’ ‘Catching Fire,’ Superman vs. Batman, and more!

Comic-Con is well underway in San Diego and, as usual, that means a lot of big movie news and trailer premieres (and cosplay, and comics, and... surprise Metallica performances?).

Over the past several years, the Con, which originally started as a strictly comics-centric event, has seen more and more Hollywood presence, and has grown to encompass pop culture at large. Love it or hate it, Comic-Con is the best annual way to get the inside scoop on some of the most-anticipated films and television shows, and has become the place to debut new footage.

Check out our roundup of some of the biggest announcements and trailer premieres, below!

We all knew that The Walking Dead, the most popular series on cable, would return for a fourth season, but now you catch of glimpse of what the next chapter of the horror saga has in store. Set to premiere Oct. 13 on AMC, this season marks the debut of a new showrunner, Scott Gimple- the show's third in four years. Check out the zombified new trailer:

A teaser for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire dropped back in the spring, but Comic-Con brings us the first proper full look at the upcoming film. Much like the marketing for the original Hunger Games, we don't get to see much of the games themselves, but rather the events leading up to the action. Watch the new trailer for the highly-anticipated sequel, which hits theaters Nov. 22, below:

Veronica Mars made headlines back in April, when a Kickstarter-fueled effort to fund a film based on the cult TV series turned into the most-backed campaign in the site's history. The cast and crew are hard at work to deliver the Veronica Mars movie sometime in 2014, but not too busy to stop by Comic-Con to debut some new footage (skip to the 3:10 mark if just want to see the teaser):

Kick-Ass 2's release is right around the corner (Aug. 16), but, in case you were concerned that the sequel might not contain enough ass kicking, the film dropped a new red band (read: violent and profane, so NSFW) extended trailer, just for Comic-Con:

Riddick, the third film in Vin Diesel's Chronicles Of Riddick series has been a long time coming, and was made independently, akin to the trilogy's first outing, Pitch Black. Like that film, Riddick takes a darker, more R-rated approach, distancing itself from its big-budget predecessor, Chronicles. Check out the latest red band trailer, and catch the film Sept. 6:

In addition to releasing trailers to the general public, film studios often debut surprise footage, or teasers for films that are a long way off, strictly for the Comic-Con audience in attendance. So far, those have included teasers for The Amazing Spider Man 2 (description here) Godzilla (description here), Dawn Of The Planet of The Apes (description here), and, a big surprise- the long-rumored, forthcoming live-action World Of Warcraft movie (description here).

But perhaps the biggest movie news of the Con, at least for superhero fans? Legendary Pictures has announced that this year's Man Of Steel will not only get a sequel, with director Zack Synder and lead actor Henry Cavill returning, but that the upcoming film will also include a rebooted Batman- marking the first time that the two heroes have been featured in the same live-action movie. Set to be co-written by Dark Knight trilogy screenwriter David S. Goyer, the sequel will pit the two heroes against each other, presumably setting the stage for an eventual team-up and Justice League film, and will arrive in 2015- the same year as The Avengers 2 and Star Wars: Episode VII, or, as it shall henceforth be known: the highest-grossing year in box office history.
