The iOS and Android app, a location-based social media service, first launched in 2013.

Mobile payment company Square recently acquired some of Yik Yak's engineering team, and they have apparently decided to jettison the declining messaging platform.

On Friday, Yik Yak co-founders Brooks Buffington and Tyler Droll informed users in a blog post that they'll "begin winding down the Yik Yak app over the coming week."
