As modern films go, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was progressive with its African American and female leads. According to director JJ Abrams, that's only the beginning.
During last Thursday's Oscar Wilde Awards, Abrams was asked whether future films in the Star Wars franchise would include gay characters.
"Of course!" said Abrams, according to The Daily Beast. "When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course.”
He assures that the franchise will continue pursuing diversity in its casting and characters. "To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
