Say “aloha” to a whole new side of Polyvinyl’s finest.
Aloha - Light WorksPosted by Laila Hanson on 22-May-08 @ 02:45 PM
[4/5]Over the course of four prior full-lengths, Aloha have mastered the art of mixing gorgeous vocal melodies with shimmering instrumentation as complex as it is serene. We won't dance around the issue though; Light Works is a markedly different side of the band. "Different" doesn't mean "bad," however, as the band's new, more acoustic-based sound is just as gorgeous as anything they've recorded previously. The plaintive sounds of Tony Cavallario's vocals perfectly accompany the acoustic guitar, drums and piano that round out the arrangements. "Trick Spring" is as haunting as songs come, and the minimal instrumentation insure every word makes an impact. Aloha haven't lost command of their more upbeat side, either: "The End" has a sing-song rhythm that fits Cavallario's vocals just as well as their slower forays.
